Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Diagnosed at the Age of Eight Years: A Case Report

More than 70% of global deaths are due to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), with diabetes being one of the top five. While type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) typically begins in adulthood, its prevalence in children and adolescents is rising. Risk factors include genetics, lifestyle, obesity, ethnic background, and maternal diabetes during pregnancy. The American Diabetes Association recommends early screening for at-risk children starting at age 10 or puberty. A recent study in Bangladesh found that some children were diagnosed before age 10, and this report highlights the youngest known T2DM case in Bangladesh—diagnosed at age eight.
